Old Shops of Combe Down

Unlike public buildings which are relatively few, shops have at one time or another existed in most corners of the village. Not only do they represent a rich mine of information on the populations' day-to-day needs, but they have come and gone, and changed in nature, so often as to make their research particularly rewarding.

The Society has so far merely collected shop names and positions on a sporadic basis and two are illustrated here. Research is ongoing and a 'Shop Workshop' is planned for 2006.

Please let us know of any facts you have on shops that are no longer extant - pictures are particularly welcome.

Ing's shop in the Avenue. When did it close down?

A
F.J. Hobbs - the 'Hygeinic Bakery'! The horse-drawn vehicles have been drawn in and the second storey to the building on the left erased.

B
The same building, now the 'Deli', this time the photo is untouched.
Vehicles often give an accurate time when the picture was taken
